Kindergarteners Research Birds

Happy April, Longhorns! It’s finally time for kindergartners to get to join in the fun of research =) Right now we’re doing a practice booklet together about owls.

Fun Fact: Did you know that girl owls are bigger than boy owls?

Next week, kindergartners will get with a partner and pick a bird to do their own projects on. Some of the birds they can pick are penguins, peacocks, flamingos, hummingbirds, and hawks.

1st graders learn how to cite their research resources

Research

This week at the CRE library, 1st graders are learning all about nonfiction research and how to cite their sources. They learned that, in order to do research they have to:

  1. Think of some questions they want to ask about their topic
  2. Brainstorm which experts can answer their questions (remember: you have to ask an expert – somebody who went to school in the subject and it’s their job)
  3. Find an expert resource nonfiction book in the CRE library or on the CRE library research resources page
  4. Write the answers to your questions on a chart

P.S. Don’t forget to CITE YOUR SOURCE (put the expert’s name on your paper)

Mo Willems at Book People on Thursday!

Hey all you Pigeon lovers,

Mo Willems (Pigeon books, Elephant and Piggie books, and Knuffle Bunny books) is coming to Book People on Thursday, February 18. He’ll be there for his new books Cat the Cat, Who is That? and Let’s Say Hi to Friends
Who Fly!
Mr. Willems will start the event off with a puppet show, and then he’ll read his new books, and draw some pictures for the crowd.  A portion of the sales from any of Mo’s books will be going to Caritas of Austin, a
local non-profit that supports those experiencing poverty.

Heads up, Longhorns — the BookPeople store is going to make you you buy either of the new Cat books in order to have anything signed. He will sign an unlimited number of books purchased at the event, and ONE book brought from home. Come dressed in your PJs and enjoy a silly evening with one of the funniest dudes ever to write about pigeons and naked mole rats.  His show will start at 6PM.

Dictionaries, Thesauri & Encyclopedias — OH MY!

Cactus Ranch 2nd graders are coming to the library today to learn how to use the dictionary, thesaurus & encyclopedia. We’re learning that to do research, you need to use the Reference section of the library. (P.S. Research is just a fancy way to say, “I have a question, and I need to find the answer.”)

The 2 keys to using reference materials for research:

1. Dictionaries, thesauri & encyclopedias are really easy to use because they are arranged in alphabetical order. This means that all the “A” words are at the front, then come the “B” words, and next the “C” words….get it?

2. D, T & E’s give you Guide Words at the top of the pages – Guide Words tell you what’re the first and last words on the pages…this’ll help you flip through the book faster
